Would you consider yourself to be an average person? How about above average? Maybe below average? There are a lot of people that think of themselves as average.
I remember from an early age that I wanted to be the best at whatever it was that I was doing. I am sure that the competitive side of me had something do with this. It did not matter what it was. I did not want to lose.
At some point in time, I am not sure when this started, but it now seems like it is acceptable to just show up. We give participation medals to kids who just show up and play the games in little league. Everyone gets a trophy. I do not understand this. This is creating a standard that it is ok to be average.
You do not have to be average. So, how do you not be average?
Contribute. It is not enough to just show up. Most people want to stop at showing up. You have to add value in some way. Adding value will get you past about 80% of the people that are out there.
Don’t give up. We are now in the age of instant gratification. Everyone wants everything right now (or maybe even yesterday). Things take time. Most people will give up at the first bit of resistance they face. Do not do this. Keep pushing forward. Most of the time when people give up on something, they are really close to breaking through. When you want to give up, don’t give into this.
Hustle. There is no substitute for this. It takes hard work not be like everyone else. Work with other people aren’t. Do the things other people are not willing to do. Do this consistently and you will rise above the crowd.
