Jerry just graduated from college and started his new job one month ago. Jerry has a deadline on a project due today. Jerry forgot all about it.
Don’t be like Jerry!
These are moments I like to call “Oh Sh*t Moments”. These are those times when someone asked you for something, a few weeks pass and then you see them in the hallway and they ask you about it and you completely forgot all about it.
“Oh sh*t. I forgot all about that!”, you say.
If you are just starting out in your career or maybe just starting a new job, one of the most important things you can do is follow up with people.
Do not suck at following up!
So many people are so bad at this. This is your chance to move ahead of the crowd. If you will take the time to get organized and become really good at following up, you will rise above the crowd.
So the question is, how do you excel at following up with people?
Here are three quick things you can do today to become better at following up with people:
Get organized. Clear off your desk, clean out your bag, and make sure that you do not have unprocessed items laying around. These will get lost in the shuffle if you do not take care of them now.
Write it down. Now that you have everything processed, write down the next actions and assign them a due date.
Use your calendar. Schedule time on your calendar to complete the next actions as well as the date you actually need to follow up with the person.
It really is that easy. Do not try to keep everything in your head. As David Allen says, “Your brain is for having ideas, not holding them”.
